"It is our way of life"

For the Nava family of New Albany, Indiana located in Southern Indiana, tradition is more than a hobby and more than heritage; it is our way of life. The Nava family have made it their life's work to teach people of all ages about their traditions.

"A family of many art forms"

Reviewing the Nava's repertoire, it's difficult to find an art form with which they are not engaged and which they do not teach. Anthony creates and plays traditional flutes and hand drums. As a young adult he was taught peyote stitch from his grandmother Dorothy, as he began with simple loomwork he expanded his beadwork expertise as other members of his family or community taught him other variations of beadwork.

Shannon was taught by her Grandmother Carolyn, traditional embroidery and sewing. Shannon is skillful at making Granddaughter Dolls that are showcased in galleries across the East. The Nava's are all skilled Master beadworkers, leathercrafters and jewelers. Having grown up in a home full of art, the Nava's children have all taken up traditional crafting. In addition to the Nava's artforms listed, they often travel to schools all over the East to teach children and adults about their various artforms and cultural traditions.
